How Did it Break

Not rated

An original look at the events of 1989, including the November events, is offered in a new book by TIC BRNO titled How Did it Break "Jak to ruplo". While it is primarily aimed at children and young adults who did not live through the Velvet Revolution, their parents and anyone who welcomes a fresh look at historical events that do not conform to what is written in textbooks will also enjoy it.

The narrator Leoš is an ordinary boy. He goes to the fifth grade, is a pioneer and from time to time has to recite annoying poems on communist anniversaries. One day he comes across a strange secret that no one wants to talk to him about. Leoš decides to get to the bottom of the family secret. In his search, he visits a number of places in Brno and has wonderful adventures. Although at first there are no signs in the dreary and dirty city, the unraveling of the mystery and also November 1989 comes irresistibly closer...

The publication for children and young adults was published by TIC BRNO on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution. In it, historian Michal Konečný, in collaboration with illustrator Barbora Straková, describes from his perspective the time when communism ended and democracy began. These were socially turbulent times, when the child hero Leoš uncovers a family secret and "breaks from it". Not only in Brno, but also in the whole Czechoslovakia of that time.

The book is full of pictures, historical photographs, ciphers with an unexpected punch line and is complemented by an interesting map of the city. Together with Leoš, readers can recite Majakovsky, visit the Brno Exhibition Grounds, eat at the Bulgarian restaurant Jalta, drink lemonade at a stand in Sputnik or run away from the state police at the illegal gramophone record exchange in the Janáček Theater.

An unconventional Brno guide to normalization How Did it Break follows its successful predecessor Zooming through Brno, which introduced children to the First Republic Brno. It is available in information centers and in the e-shop TIC BRNO.
